How is it that the union wants to continue to bank sick days? According to this Toronto Star article this the main reason for the strike: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/654346 Most of us don't get paid sick days, much less have the ability to bank them if we are fortunate enough not to have to take them. How can the City of Toronto continue to take on this liability now reported to be a quarter of a billion dollars according to this CBC.ca article: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2009/06/23/leave-bank.html CUPE and the members need to give themselves a collective shaking for thinking that they can continue to rob the taxpayers of Toronto blind.

About CUPE Local 416 - Toronto Civic Employees Union (TCEU):

Toronto Civic Employees Union, Local 416 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), represents over 8,000 City of Toronto workers who provide many of the quality public services that help make Toronto such a great city. Our union has been in place since 1917.

We are in your neighbourhoods saving lives, operating libraries, maintaining roads, clearing snow, rescuing animals, picking up your garbage and recycling, and keeping our parks clean and beautiful.

We are paramedics, social housing workers, water and wastewater specialists, librarians and other library workers, gardeners, labourers, animal control officers, parking lot attendants, and more.

TCEU Local 416 and its members are at the forefront of many initiatives and programs that improve the quality of life in our city. Some examples:

  • Local 416 pioneered proposals for a proper “green” plan that would divert waste from overflowing landfill sites. We pushed for the blue, gray, and green boxes that are now in common use.

  • We are promoting a publicly-owned, publicly-operated organics processing plant and are participating in a committee to make it a reality.

  • Our library workers have brought a lifelong love of reading to countless Toronto children and we have done much to preserve and enhance our library services.

  • We are key players in Toronto’s WaterWatch campaign to ensure that our water supply is protected.

  • Our members have been instrumental in the “naturalization” that is taking place in many of our parks, sharing their expertise with members of the community.

  • We have pushed for environmental protection for city workers – something that helps protect the environment for everyone.

  • We are continuously advancing ideas for improving Toronto’s social housing.

  • Local 416 members also raise a great deal of money for the United Way every year, further helping our community.

We are very proud of our city and the work our members do to keep it great, every minute of every day.
